UK Elite Teams By Season : 2009

For SL XIV two extra sides were added to the elite league, Salford from the Manchester area and the Welsh Crusaders team. it was also the start of a three year licensing period where promotion and relegation was suspended.

League: This was won by the Leeds Rhinos with 42 points, from St Helens on 38, Huddersfield Giants on 36 points and Hull KR on 35. The two new teams finished well adrift at the bottom.

Challenge Cup: The 108th cup was held this year. One semi final pitted the Lancashire club Wigan Warriors against the Cheshire side the Warrington Wolves. The latter proved too strong, winning 39-26 and giving them their first final since 1990. Meanwhile Huddersfield overcame St Helens 24-14 to become the other finalist. The final was played at Wembly before over 76,000 fans and they witnessed Warrington taking the cup 25-16.

Finals: By the time the semi finals arrived, it was Leeds against the French side Les Catalans Dragons. Leeds got home 27-20. In the other semi final, Saints narrowly progressed 14-10 at the expense of the Wigan Warriors. The final had the two top teams from the league competing and the result was the sanme. Leeds came out victorious 18-10. This was the middle of a run of five consecutive final losses for St Helens.

In summary, my points below had St Helens as the most successful team with 46 points, despite not winning any of the trophies. They achieved that by putting Leeds out of the cup in the 4th round. The Rhinos won the league and grand final for 40 points. Huddersfield came in third on 38 points.
